Sculptor Charlie Brouwer and painter Jennifer Collins realized in 1998, when they exhibited together for the first time, that there was a meaningful relationship between their work, which they decided to explore further. This relationship flows naturally from the fact that they are father and daughter and share a common aesthetic. It is also evident in the similarity of imagery, themes, and metaphors found in their work. They have continued to exhibit together and occasionally collaborate in individual works combining wood sculpture relief and oil painting. Their collaborative pieces have taken the form of both small, intimate works and large scale commissions. For subject matter they rely on nature and experiences attempting to capture a sense of specific time and place, with suggestions of metaphorical connections, and feelings of transcendence. Recent large scale commissioned collaborations include an installation for Carilion Saint Albans Behavioral Health in Montgomery County, Virginia and a piece designed for a prayer chapel at Central United Methodist Church also in Radford, Virginia.
